The length of the substance- abuse SAP process varies from person to person. It depends on the severity of use which is guided by the DSM-5 criteria, and the level of care, which is determined by the ASAM guidelines. The time from is specific to each individual and severity of use and can only be determined by a screening/assessment.
An assessment is a screening tool used to determine severity of mental health/substance use and to identify the least restrictive level of care needed for the individual.
After the screening is completed, the next step is to conduct a thorough
evaluation of all the information collected which provides an overview of six
dimensions. This information is reviewed, and once a diagnosis is made a recommendation will follow. This begins the referral process where the SAP aligns the individual with the most appropriate level of care to address their
specific needs.
